Opening speech by MR Kazuaki Okada, Chair of the Board of the School

Hello everyone, distinguished guests and students at the Derbyshire Japanese school.

My name is Kozmo Okada, and I have the honour of being the Chairperson of Derbyshire Japanese School.

It is thanks to the contribution from Derbyshire County Council, South Derbyshire District Council, John Port Spencer Academy, members of the community, the teachers, staff, parents and the managing committee that we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Derbyshire Japanese School here today.

On behalf of the school committee, the pupils and their parents, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for providing an excellent environment where students from age 5 to 18 can learn in the same building including a dedicated Japanese library. It is invaluable for the Japanese families that live and work here. Thank you.

In the 30-year journey, we have faced a number of challenges, especially in the recent years. On the 28th year, we have had to leave the previous college. As we struggled to find an alternative location, we had to decide whether to continue with our Japanese school.

A year preceding that, an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Derbyshire and Toyota City’s twinning was held at the Chatsworth House Country Fair. There, I had the opportunity to volunteer to demonstrate Origami and Kendama with my family. It was wonderful getting to know the council staff and share our Japanese culture.

When the Council members became aware that we were struggling to find an alternative school location, to our pleasant surprise, they proactively started to ask around the schools in this area and participated in the negotiations. As a result, John Port Spencer Academy kindly offered their premises to ensure the continuity of the Derbyshire Japanese School. I was struck by their selflessness and their spirit of mutual support in time of crisis without seeking any reward; I feel profoundly grateful for their generosity and friendship.

Afterwards, during the Covid crisis, we have had to close the school during lockdown. In spite of my worry, the teachers were amazing in their endeavour to hold remote classes. Seeing the teachers’ faces and listening to their voices were more than enough to raise students’ motivation and comfort them in their difficult times.

At Derbyshire Japanese School, pupils are encouraged to read books out loud; I believe this contributed to their excellent achievement in creative writing competitions. Furthermore, the unique curriculum for the higher school years such as the maths class, is thanks to all the teachers led by Principal Sato, who runs the school in a very orderly manner.

On a private note, my daughter graduated from this school this spring. She is grateful for the school to provide such a wonderful environment and the precious opportunity to being able to talk in Japanese every Saturday.

The students face greater pressure than their peers because they learn in both British and Japanese schools. I have no doubt that their struggles and efforts will be a source of strength and confidence in their future and that they, who experienced such challenges, will be the bridge to link the UK and Japan and shoulder future relations of both countries.

It is my honour to celebrate this 30-year milestone with you all today, and I hope that the Derbyshire Japanese School will continue to prosper for years to come.

It is with sincere gratitude that I will never forget the time and effort dedicated by the Embassy for providing the curriculum, Councils for the support, the John Port Spencer Academy for housing the school, and all the people who have contributed to preserve the place of education for our community.

I look forward to making a step to the future, together, with all of you. Thank you very much.

Remarks by MR Kazuhiro Kawase, Minister and Consul-General, Embassy of Japan in the UK

Derbyshire County Council, South Derbyshire District Council, John Port Spencer Academy, East Midlands Japanese Association, members of the school board, students and their parents,

It is an immense honour for me to be here at the 30th Anniversary Ceremony of Derbyshire Japanese School. I understand that the school has been planting Japanese trees as symbols of friendship, and a young cherry tree was also planted in this school’s premises.

I could similarly say that, a tree called Japanese School was planted here in Derbyshire 30 years ago. Having an appropriate education environment for its children is a vital concern for the Japanese expatriate community, and establishing such a school was also a commitment of the Japanese community to stay and live together with the local community.

I am so glad to see that this tree has grown, now with firm roots and full of green leaves, and borne so many fruits in these 30 years. The students who studied in this school were nourished by the best of both Japanese and British Educational systems, and when grown-up and ripe, have contributed to making Japan, the UK, and the wider world better and more prosperous.

Of course, for a tree to grow, fertile soil is essential. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the local councils concerned and John Port Spencer Academy, which have warmly accepted and collaborated with the Japanese community and its school.

I hope that in decades to come Derbyshire Japanese School will further flourish, like the rich woodlands of Derbyshire, and also beautifully bloom, like cherry blossom in Japan.

Thank you very much.

What is Japanese School like?

Derbyshire Japanese School is fun and everyone gets to learn together. I like learning with friends. Homework is sometimes a bit of handful but sometimes I do it with friends and it becomes enjoyable. We have children here from Reception right up to Sixth form. I started from Year 1 so I have a lot of friends throughout the school. My little brother also comes here and we look forward to spending Saturdays at Derbyshire Japanese School. (Speech by S.D, Elementary School Year 4)

Every Saturday we start our lesson with Kanji. Kanji are Chinese characters. Then we have Japanese lessons. We read different stories in the lessons and learn a lot of different things such as how to write letters. We all like to play around the lake where the ducks are at break time. At lunch time we eat together with our classmates. In the afternoon we study Maths. Some of the things are the same that we learn in England and some are different. Learning two times makes me feel lucky. (Speech by S.H.M-G, Elementary School Year 4)

Every Saturday morning, in the car on the way to John Port School, I feel really excited. When we arrive here, it’s just like being in Japan because we are in a Japanese speaking environment. I don’t feel alone. I feel like I am a part of a community when we all eat our Bento lunch together. It’s like being in Japanese school in Japan. It feels really special. At break time we like to running around and play. We like go to the library too because it’s full of Japanese books and manga comics. (Speech by K.L, Elementary School Year 4)

The best thing about Derbyshire Japanese School is that you learn lots of things about Japanese school life. For example, you get to experience studying Japanese and Maths the way you would in Japan. I like the fact that you can make friends from other places. Another thing I like is the events you can take part in such as Sports Day, Reading presentation or Jumble Sales. But my favourite thing is that you can learn about Japanese culture.

The lessons start and finish with a bow. We learn to bin our rubbish ourselves and keep the public facility nice and clean. This is our Japan in Derbyshire. We appreciate all the people whose help and support make it possible. (Speech by I.L, Junior High School Year 1)

30 years and the future

It has been 30 years since the Derbyshire Japanese School was founded in 1991. The school moved to John Port Spencer academy in Etwall and changed its name to Derbyshire Japanese School in 2019.

For the 30th anniversary, it was decided that a new school emblem was to be made. Students and teachers all voted and chose the best student- designed school emblem. Here to tell us more about the emblem, is S S, from the 1st year of High School.

I am grateful for this opportunity to design the new school emblem for the 30th anniversary of this school.

I hope that the people of this school will spread their wings and succeed in this world, which was my inspiration for the wings used in the emblem.

I have drawn the green in the middle to represent Derby’s rich natural landscape, the ram at the top to signify Derby’s traditional symbol. Also, I have tried to capture the essence of Japan by adding Japanese Sakura petals to the emblem.

In these confusing times, I hope that we will not forget the time we spend here at Derbyshire Japanese school as we all begin our individual journeys. (S.S, High School Year 1)

What is Japanese School for us?

What is Japanese School for us?

W.T, S.M / Presentation by T.W and M.S, High School Year 3

These past 2 years, we have largely been attending online lessons as a result of Covid-19. It made us realise how valuable spending time with friends and teachers alongside learning at Derbyshire Japanese School really is.

In my school and the area I live, there are no other Japanese people around my age. So, this Japanese school is the only place where I can talk to my friends in Japanese and learn together. The richness of Japanese vocabulary and expression, as well as the different ways of approaching problems in maths, have helped me to gain a deeper understanding of my studies at the local school. (M.S, High School Year 3)

We are really grateful towards all the members of this special community for establishing and developing this school for the past 30 years. We hope we can continue this wonderful path together.
